Let's be honest. Discipline has been a popular topic for decades, and mountains of books and articles have suggested approaches to make an impact. When I speak to teachers, though, they continually tell me that they feel hampered by inadequate help from home. Parents, on the other hand, say that their children are so bombarded with negative influences that they have a hard time knowing what to do. What's the answer? Obviously, the answer is far from easy.
I offer two programs to help, one for parents and the other for teachers. The focus of both is how to reach young people who haven't responded to traditional efforts. Building from the idea that our approach to discipline will differ dramatically depending on whether we set out to control behavior or build character, the program is offered as a one- to three-hour workshop, depending upon your needs and availability. The one-hour session introduces the keys to helping young people change directions and begin following a path toward taking responsibility for their choices. The longer programs provide time for a more interactive experience, with the three-hour version including time to role play scenarios that participants bring into the discussion.
