Building Character & Increasing Academic Achievement

The Toward Higher Ground program began as a half-day workshop for teachers. Today, it has grown into a program that includes one-hour presentations, half- and full-day workshops, and even serves as the foundation for district-wide comprehensive character-development initiatives. What makes Toward Higher Ground different is a combination of several important elements:

  • Research-based approaches that address character-related challenges and academic achievement
  • Perspectives that empower educators to use tools of curriculum development and assessment in new ways to reach students who fail to respond to typical approaches
  • Assessment tools that help educators determine the combination of approaches and resources most likely to address their own unique circumstances, not just take a one-size-fits-all approach to program implementation
  • A focus on success that grabs students' attention by helping them set a vision for success in their own lives and develop the respect, discipline, and responsibility it takes to realize their potential
